Status: Ended

We’re inviting elected officials and local authority officers to join Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) for a briefing on the £12 million Boscombe-Christchurch Network Investment Project. We are holding three online briefing events and are keen to hear your views on this project.

Project Overview

Our £12 million electricity network upgrade is due to get underway in late September 2024 and will run until 2026. It will boost your power supplies by future-proofing the underground cables that carry electricity for homes and businesses in the Bournemouth and Christchurch areas.

Works Programme

Starting in late September, SSEN will be installing new underground electricity cables to connect key substations in the area:

  • Two will run from Christchurch Grid Substation to Southbourne Primary Substation.
  • Two will run from Christchurch Primary Substation to Boscombe East Primary Substation.

This work will involve digging approximately 5.8 kilometres of trenches to lay the new cables and will involve some traffic management and road closures to deliver this work safely and as quickly as possible.

Why are we delivering this work?

The Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole (BCP) Council has set out ambitious plans to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, with a more immediate goal of making their own operations carbon neutral by 2030. This project is to upgrade the local electricity network and will help to facilitate BCP’s plan to increase local renewable energy generation and install new EV charging infrastructure.

The electricity network is expected to see a significant increase in demand over the coming years. Our goal is to ensure that the existing infrastructure is prepared to meet the new requirements necessary for creating a carbon-neutral future for Bournemouth.

What to expect

We hope to be a good neighbour while this work takes place and are pleased to host this more detailed briefing which will cover the programme of works, project timeline, and what we’re doing to work with the community. This event will be co-hosted by SSEN Large Capital Delivery and our delivery partner Keltbray Infrastructure Services. Your attendance and input will be greatly appreciated.
