Rural industries are the life blood of rural economies, jobs, and sustainability. As reducing carbon outputs becomes ever more urgent, these industries need to know how to do that efficiently, economically and without disruption. This is difficult for energy intensive industries, in remote locations, where the electricity network is sparce and there is little or no gas network. The use of oil, coal, LPG, or diesel in these areas is widespread, but polluting.
Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) serve the most remote areas of the United Kingdom, including the Scottish Highlands and all the Scottish Islands. These beautiful, yet remote areas, are home to many geographically protected businesses and brands, from whisky distilleries to cheese dairies and from sawmills to food production sites, they are all important to the local economies and prosperity.
Decarbonising these businesses will be complex. SSEN has joined forces with Guidehouse and ADE to assess the best ways of doing this. Together they launched RIDES (Rural Industrial Decarbonisation Solutions) to gauge the magnitude of the problem, the barriers faced by rural industries and how the energy networks can best support them to reduce carbon without adding to customer's bills.
Join us to hear what progress has been made by the RIDES team in the discovery phase of this new SIF Project.
