Traditionally, energy networks rely on engineered solutions to tackle challenges like flooding, overheating, and visual impact. The Nature4Networks project pioneers an innovative approach, investigating NbS as sustainable and resilient alternatives tailored to the unique demands of electricity networks in Great Britain.

While NbS have been successfully applied in areas such as coastal protection and urban greening, adapting them for energy networks presents distinct challenges. Linear infrastructure like overhead lines, safety standards, and sensitivity to physical disturbances require new, innovative approaches. Addressing these complexities is the core focus of Nature4Networks.

Key highlights of the project include:

  • Discovery Phase Outcomes: Development of the Nature4Networks Catalogue, offering a conceptual evaluation of NbS for energy networks.
  • Alpha Phase Goals: Refining four use cases—Linear Woodlands, SuDS, Bioswales for Transformer Bunding, and Thorny Planting—to assess feasibility, address safety and regulatory considerations, and enhance cost-effectiveness.
  • Innovation and Readiness: Advancing NbS to practical deployment by enhancing their technical readiness levels (TRL), integration readiness levels (IRL), and commercial readiness levels (CRL).

During the event, we’ll discuss:

  • How NbS can improve asset protection, reliability, and network performance while delivering co-benefits.
  • Detailed plans for testing and implementing NbS in real-world contexts.
  • Insights from stakeholder engagement and strategies to integrate NbS into regulatory and investment frameworks.
